Interfacing Windows Media Player 11 with your Xbox 360
Overview
I found the tutorials on Xbox’s website for streaming content from your computer to your Xbox 360 very challenging to understand. Also, for those of us who own an ipod rather than a Zune, we don’t want to install the Zune software on our computer (Especially since it’s far inferior to itunes). So here are the steps to get Windows Media Player 11 working with your Xbox 360.
1.) Make sure you have Windows XP SP2. You can download it here.
2.) Get yourself a copy of Windows Media Player 11. You can download a copy of it from Microsoft’s Website.
* Now for those of you who have h4x0r3d I mean “shared” copies of windows, Windows Media Player 11 requires a “Windows Genuine Advantage” check and will not install unless your copy is legit.
Fortunately for you, I am willing to help you out although I don’t condone pirated software.
- After downloading Windows Media Player 11, get yourself a copy of WinRar and install it.
- Now right click on the Windows Media Player installer and select “Extract Here”. (Yes you can extract .exe’)

- The .exe will spit out a bunch of files, just ignore them for now. Now you need to get your 1337 h4x on! Download the file LegitLibM.dll.rar and extract it. The file inside will be named legitlib.dll, rename it to LegitLibM.dll and copy it to the location where you extracted your Windows Media Player 11 exe. It will ask you if you want to override the existing file; click yes.
- Now run setup_wm.exe and it should install as usual. (Feel bad about your software piracy yet?)
3.) Now that you have Windows Media Player 11 installed, you can interface it with your Xbox 360. Open up Windows Media Player (notice the sweet new look). It may ask you to import media, you can click yes or you can always do that later.
4.) Click on the “Library” button on top. From the drop-down menu click on “Media sharing”. At this point you should have your Xbox 360 connected to your network and powered on.

Check the box labeled “Share my Media” and click ok.

The next screen should have a label that says “Share my media to:” and you should see Xbox 360 in the content box. Select the Xbox 360 and click Apply and then OK.
5.) Now you should be able to go to your Xbox 360 Dashboard, select the media tab, and select either “Music”, “Pictures”, or “Video”.

6.) Select Computer from the next screen. The Xbox 360 will search for your computer and pull up your current playlists as well as media that was imported into Window Media Player.
There you have it! A way to listen to audio, view pictures, and view videos on you Xbox 360 from your PC. Happy Xbox-ing!
